Painting Furniture – When to DIY, When to hire a professional

Painted antique and vintage furniture is all the rage right now. The antiques stores and market booths are chock full of antique and vintage furniture picked and painted by young women all over the country. They usually pick soft neutral colors or the ever classic grays. A lot of them are using Annie Sloan chalk paint and furniture wax but honestly, it’s very expensive. There are much cheaper ways to get a nice coat of paint on your furniture. Here are some painted furniture pointers.

1: Decide if the piece you want to paint will accept paint well. Examine your vintage or antique furniture piece. Is it solid wood, does it have veneer? A hard shiny/slick top? Furniture best suited for painting will be solid wood with no hard gloss to the top. If you have a piece from the 50s through the 80s it could have a coat of Formica on the top. It’s very hard to get paint to stay on Formica. So if you can, pick classic, solid wood furniture to paint.
